Urban Retreat is the culmination of a long design practice rooted in the belief that well-considered spaces shape how we live, think, and restore ourselves.

As the owner, I have led the creation and/or renovation of private homes and select commercial environments over decades, working closely with clients to translate aspiration into spaces that feel both intentional and deeply personal. Each project begins with listening and understanding patterns of daily life, emotional needs, and the subtle rituals that make a space feel inhabitable rather than merely finished.

The work is characterized by restraint, material intelligence, and a sensitivity to light, proportion, and atmosphere. Rather than pursuing trends, Urban Retreat projects prioritize longevity, comfort, and quiet clarity, resulting in environments that age gracefully and support lived experience.

This practice reflects a broader philosophy carried throughout my work: that design, at its best, creates refuge without retreating from the world, offering spaces that are grounded, humane, and enduring.

Services include architecture, design, budget development and construction management.

“Sam is very easy to work with. She designed our home in Toronto and then designed our dream cottage up north. She is creative and practical and took time to understand our needs. ”

Jennifer and Alan Morgan

“Sam is masterful at creating kitchens. I heard her speak at a home show and she said, ‘never trust a skinny designer to design your dream kitchen’ and I was sold! Sam created a kitchen that was beautiful and functional - featuring solid walnut cabinetry and a quartzite countertop that made my heart skip a beat. She also designed custom hardware and had a metalsmith make it. I now have a one of a kind kitchen that I enjoy everyday!

“I met Sam when I was standing in front of some slabs at CIOT. She offered her opinion and I hired her on the spot. She renovated my home and my front and back landscaping. At the end of the project, she gave me a piece of her art. My family loves our home and the entire experience was terrific.”
